Leadership & Career Development

GEMS program

A comprehensive development program combining workshops and mentorship to empower women in industry to step into leadership roles.

Organisation Overview

The Tasmanian Minerals, Manufacturing and Energy Council (TMEC) is the peak industry body representing Tasmania’s diverse industrial sectors. Dedicated to promoting a globally competitive and sustainable operating environment, TMEC advocates for its members while fostering collaboration, innovation, and workforce development to ensure a cleaner, smarter, and more inclusive future for the state’s economy.

TMEC is actively fostering the next generation of female leaders through its acclaimed “GEMS” (Growth, Empowerment, Management, Selfcare) program. Designed specifically for women working in non-traditional roles across the mining, manufacturing, and energy sectors, this initiative aims to build the confidence, skills, and networks necessary for career progression. The program addresses the unique challenges women face in these industries by providing a structured, supportive environment for professional growth.

The course is delivered through three intensive workshops that cover critical leadership competencies. Participants begin with goal setting and communication profiling, move on to practical governance skills—including writing and presenting a board paper to a mock board of real industry executives—and conclude with tailored leadership strategies such as conflict resolution. This practical training is complemented by six individual mentoring sessions with industry experts, ensuring that participants receive personalised guidance to refine their goals and navigate their path to leadership.
